Description

The outbuilding at The Gatehouse, likely originally stables with a loft above, dates from the 16th century. It features a combination of banded flint and limestone with a single Roman tiled roof and has a gable end facing the road. The two-storey structure has a two-window south front, which includes a ribbed door set in a Tudor-arched staff-moulded architrave to the right of center, and a 3-light hollow-chamfered mullioned window with arched lights and a hoodmould on either side. Above the doorway, there is a planked loft door with moulded jambs.

The left side facing the road has a blocked 3-light mullioned window with arched lights and a hoodmould on both the ground and first floors, as well as a blocked single-light window in the gable. The verge is saddleback coped with scrolled volutes at the eaves. The rear of the building features a 19th-century casement window, a blocked single-light window, and a loft door with moulded jambs similar to the front. The right side has folding garage doors with a 20th-century round-arched head and a rubble stone buttress to the right.

Inside, there is a loft over the west end, with a roof supported by collar and tie-beam trusses, as well as some arch-braced collar trusses. Although this building is referred to as a chapel, there is no evidence to indicate that it was ever used for that purpose; it is more likely to have served as a service building for the main house, The Gatehouse.
