Description
Castle Mill, also known as Stone Mill, is a lower water-driven mill located on the site of a former medieval castle mill, dating from around 1800. The mill features eight ranges of windows. An upper block, which is wider and taller for a steam engine, was added in 1819 and has four windows. The building consists of three storeys, an attic, and a basement, constructed from small ashlar stone with quoins, cill bands, and dressings. It has a double Roman tile roof with ridge cresting.
The mill includes two-light square-headed windows with mullions and glazing bar casements, as well as large three-light dormers, six on each side. The 1819 steam engine block retains first-floor round-headed windows on both sides for the engine room. On the south-west side, to the left of this window, there is an engaged ashlar chimney with bands and a brickwork finish. Modern plate glass windows have been inserted, removing the mullions to the left of the chimney, and there is also a modern block to the left. The north-west front has three windows and steps leading to the first floor.
The listed mills in Court Street form an industrial group with Home Mill Buildings, Castle Factory, and The Chapel, which houses the offices of Samuel Salter and Co Ltd.
