Description

Farmbuildings at Lawn Farm are a group of model farm structures built in 1869 for the Marquess of Westminster. They are constructed from dressed limestone with Welsh slate roofs and feature ashlar stacks. The buildings form ranges that enclose two fold yards, except on the south side.

The north range contains stables with planked stable doors and shuttered windows, along with square louvred roof vents topped with pyramidal slate cappings. There is an ashlar stack for the tack room. On the east sides of both fold yards, there is a single-storey range of cow sheds and shelter sheds, which have been partly converted to sheep sheds. These also feature square louvred vents with slate pyramidal cappings and a wrought iron weathervane located in the middle of the range.

The west range includes a large barn with a projecting two-storey granary and a former engine house on the east side, which has a partly truncated ashlar stack for the engine. The barn has a louvred vent topped with a weathervane bearing the letter W for the Westminsters. There are large Tudor-arched cart entries on either side of the barn for access to the yards, and a two-bay open-fronted implement shed facing outward at the south end of this range. The barn features a shallow-pitched queen post roof. This site is a good example of an estate farm that has seen little alteration.
