Description
Newtown Village Hall is a building originally constructed as a school in 1846, which has since been altered in the 20th century. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a clay plain and fishscale tile roof with stone coped gable ends and kneelers. The building has a two-cell plan, with a slightly smaller east range resembling the chancel of a small Medieval church. It includes a bellcote over the west end and a porch on the north front of the nave. There is a small 20th-century flat roof extension at the rear of the east range.
The exterior is single-storey, with a one-to-two window arrangement on the north front. The two-window west range to the right has a central gabled ashlar porch with a segmental arch doorway and a plank door. To the left and right of the porch are chamfered round-headed windows with diamond lattice panes, and a similar window on the left has a later casement inserted. The east end features a similar three-light round-headed lattice window, while the rear has single-light windows. The west gable end has a similar three-light window and a small stone bellcote above the gable. The interior has not been inspected. Notably, there is a conveyance from 1846 by John Benett of Pythouse to Fanny Benett and the Marquess of Westminster for the construction of the school on this site.
