Description
The gate piers and gates located to the north of Hatch House are early 18th century structures, with the gates dating from the 19th century. There are two pairs of large square piers featuring bands of vermiculation and modillioned cornices at the tops, which are adorned with large urns at the carriage entrance and ball finials on the side gate piers. The gates themselves are made of cast iron and showcase strapwork-style decoration, along with the arms of Benett and Stanford and the initials BS. These gate piers are likely connected to Hatch House, especially before the partial demolition of a larger house in 1770. The gates were hung following the marriage of Ellen Stanford to Vere Benett in the late 19th century. The Benetts of Pythouse acquired Hatch House in the 1840s, and it is probable that the lime avenue extended over a tunnel during the 19th century, linking these gates with Pythouse on the opposite side of the road.
