Description
Great Cheverell School is a school building dating from 1844. It features painted roughcast walls and a slate roof. The structure is single storey and consists of a double classroom with three bays, with an entrance located at the left end where it meets a third classroom that is positioned at right angles, presenting a gable to the street. The entrance has a boarded door set in an open gabled porch. The windows are made of stone with ovolo moulding, consisting of three lights and topped with a straight moulded label. The lights have a diamond pattern made of cast iron. The gable of the cross wing displays a raised stone long cross patonce entwined with a ribbon that is inscribed "ERECTED A.D.1844." The building has stone copings with a fleur de lys terminal. There are modest extensions at the rear for a kitchen and study, and a blocked lateral fireplace in the dual classroom. The school was founded by the vicar and became a National School in 1845, a Board School in 1876, and a Voluntary School under the Salisbury Diocese Association in 1905.
