Description
Laurel House is a house that was formerly a shop, built in 1843. It features Flemish brickwork and a slate roof. The building is two storeys high with three bays and has been extended at both ends with a lower two-storey bay. Inside, there is a central stair hall with flanking reception rooms. The front has a six-panelled door with a plain arched fanlight and a slate slab supported on wrought iron brackets. The windows are sixteen-paned sashes with finely gauged brick lintels, except for the shop window in the right bay, which has three arched lights between timber pilasters and a cornice. The lower bay on the left has a 9-pane sash window on the upper floor and a hipped roof, while the right end bay, likely added later, features false painted sashes. The building has gable stacks, with the right stack bearing a datestone that reads M.S.S. 1843. There is also a lean-to extension at the rear. Laurel House was built for Mark Sawyer, a notable non-conformist and millwright, and his smithy remains at the back, although it is not included in this listing.
