Description
The Maltings is a semi-detached house, originally dating from the early 17th century, but faced in brick during the 18th century. The brickwork is in a Flemish bond pattern, with a tiled roof and gable-end brick stacks. The house is two storeys high with a three-window front. A central planked door is situated within a 19th-century gabled porch, flanked by three-light casement windows with segmental heads and keystones. The first floor has a two-light casement alongside three-light casements. A distinctive toothed brick eaves course is also present. The left return wall is a mix of flint and brick bands, featuring two two-light casements on both the ground and first floors. A flint and brick rear outshut includes a moulded doorcase. A central stair turret, tiled in timber, has a single casement and a hipped roof; a 20th-century two-storey extension is located to the rear left.
Inside, the house retains chamfered beams and exposed joists with step and run-out stops. There is reset wainscot panelling and plank and muntin partitions. The west-facing open fireplace has a chamfered lintel with rounded corners, while the east-facing fireplace features a fluted and chip-carved surround. The rear wall shows remnants of timber framing. A winding staircase with an octagonal newel is within the stair turret, and there’s a six-panelled wainscot door leading to the first floor. The roof is a three-bay structure with two tiers of butt purlins.
