Description
22 The Close is a late 18th century extension and partial recasing of an earlier building, likely with medieval foundations, originally serving as one outbuilding of "Aula Le Stage" at 21-21A The Close. The building is two storeys high and constructed of red brick. The rear north elevation features tile hanging on the first floor, with the ground floor made of old stone rubble and flint. The roof is tiled, hipped to the left and gabled to the right.
The south entrance front has four casement windows on the first floor, with the left-hand pair being original leaded glass and the others altered. There are three casements on the ground floor, one of which is leaded while the others are modern. The entrance includes one glazed and panelled door alongside a plain door with a hood supported by shaped brackets. The west gable end displays a vitreous brick panel on the first floor and a sash window with glazing bars on the ground floor. The east gable end has the base of an external chimney made of stone flint and brick, now flush with the wall due to a one-bay extension during late 18th century alterations.
Inside, there is a staircase featuring simple "Chinese" pattern balusters and some exposed beams on the ground floor. The roof has five bays with a crown post, although some members have been removed during renewal. Additionally, some bricks on the south front are carved with the dates 1775 and 1790, likely corresponding with the alterations made to the building.
