Description
23 The Close is a building with origins in the 16th century, but it was largely rebuilt in the late 17th to early 18th century. It is two stories tall with an attic and features stucco cladding, with string courses at both the ground and first floor levels. The building has rusticated quoins and a heavy moulded and coved cornice. The roof is hipped and covered with old tiles, and there are two hipped dormers, one with a casement window and the other with a sash window.
On the first floor, there are two windows, while the ground floor has a modern rectangular bay window with a hipped roof on the right side, which is considered poorly designed. To the left, there is an eight-panel door with a four-pane rectangular fanlight above it. The door is framed by an architrave and fluted and reeded pilasters, topped with a flat moulded hood. The east front of the house is made of red brick and has four windows with flush architrave framed sashes, retaining their glazing bars, although one has been altered. The house also retains its 16th-century cellars.
All the listed buildings in The Close create an outstanding group.
