Description
The Old House Restaurant, located at 47 and 49 New Street, is a building dating back to 1569, as indicated on a rainwater pipe, although the left gable is believed to be older. This structure features two gabled fronts and consists of two storeys with an attic. The left gabled bay is constructed from random rubble and brick, while the right-hand side, which was once exposed timber frame with plaster infilling, is now tile hung. Each gable has a two-light attic casement.
On the first floor, there are two three-light wood mullioned and transomed windows with moulded cornices above, along with a small two-light casement situated between them. The ground floor also has two similar three-light windows, which feature moulded frames and shallow bracketed hoods. All windows are fitted with modern leaded casements.
The central entrance door is wide and consists of six fielded panels, flanked by squat proportions and early 18th-century Doric pilasters, topped with a moulded entablature and pediment. There is a secondary early 19th-century door with six flush panels, set within a reeded architrave that includes corner blocks and a small flat hood.
Inside, the building retains beams and a securing wall plate, while the roof structure is sealed, although the positions of the principals and purlins are still visible. The southeast room on the first floor features an open roof with two bays and collar tie beam trusses.
The Old House Restaurant is part of a group that includes Nos 21 to 49 (odd), the School of Arts and Crafts, and Nos 61, 63, and 67 to 75 (odd).
