Description
Fairfield House with carriage house is a detached building dating from the late 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and features a stone slate roof, gable stone stacks, and coped verges. The house has three parallel ranges and is two storeys high with a three-window south front. The cellar includes a three-light mullioned window on the left and a two-light casement on the right. The ground floor features a 19th-century tripartite sash window and a plate glass sash. There is a plat band at the first floor, which has two plate glass sashes and one 12-pane sash. A moulded cornice leads to a plain blocking course.
On the left side, there is a Tuscan loggia with 20th-century glazing attached to the front range, and an entrance door with six fielded panels. The middle range has a mullioned and transomed window with arched lights leading to the stairs. The right side features a beaded two-light mullioned casement in the cellar, along with two 12-pane sashes on the ground and first floors. The parallel rear range contains 12-pane sashes.
Inside, the house has stairs with stick balusters, six-panelled doors set in panelled reveals, and delicate plaster ceilings adorned with fluted and swagged friezes. The attached carriage house on the left has a central square-headed doorway flanked by elliptical-arched double doors. The short wings on either side have planked doors and lunettes above. The first floor of the right-hand wing is jettied on coupled Tuscan columns, and the rear features mullioned casements.
