Description
Woolley Grange is a medium-sized manor house dating from the 17th century. It is irregularly gabled and features tall square ashlar stacks set diagonally in groups of two and three. The building has been restored in places and incorporates later additions, but retains numerous original features. The front elevation is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and is arranged over two storeys and attics, across five gables. Each gable is topped with pierced spear-head finials. Attic windows are two-light casements with stone mullions and dripmoulds. Two angular two-storey bays flank the left-hand gables, each featuring a balustraded parapet and a single three-light window on each floor, also with stone mullions. The central projecting porch includes a room above with a two-light stone-mullioned casement. The porch ceiling is carved with the date "1665" above the inner doorway. To the right of the porch are two three-light stone-mullioned casements, one on each floor, and another two-light casement in the gable. A flush relieving arch sits above the first-floor windows, all of which have dripmoulds. A further projecting bay to the right has a large gable and an angular ground-floor bay with a three-light stone-mullioned casement with single lights on the angles, a moulded cornice, and a balustraded parapet. The first floor of this bay has a four-light casement, and a two-light casement in the gable. A gabled wing on the extreme right of the frontage features a restored three-light stone-mullioned oriel window supported on stone corbelling and with a shallow embattled parapet. A later conservatory extension is situated on the extreme left of the frontage. The side elevation at this end displays three gables and contains some original three-light windows with stone mullions, leaded casements, and dripmoulds. A grass-covered terrace positioned in front of the house incorporates paved pathways and a balustraded parapet. Steps lead down from the terrace to a sunken garden, partly paved, enclosed by a low stone wall with moulded coping and ornamental urns at intervals.
