Description

Leigh House, now Bradford on Avon District Hospital, is a large house dating from the early to mid-19th century, situated within its own grounds. The front elevation presents two storeys and a mansard roof with four dormers, featuring casement windows. The house is constructed of ashlar with a slate roof. The front projects in three shallow, angular, two-storey bays, each containing three windows arranged in groups. The windows are sash windows set in reveals, with some having glazing bars. A semi-circular headed doorway is framed by a plain surround and contains a panelled door within a wooden doorcase, complemented by a wide, semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars. The rear elevation has two storeys plus a mansard roof with one dormer, and contains seven windows, also sash windows in reveals, some with glazing bars. To the right is a lower two-storey wing with three windows and a single-pitch roof. A projecting porch extends five bays from the left, supported by twin Tuscan columns, an entablature, and a blocking course, leading up three steps. Features include a plain string at first-floor level, a moulded cornice, and a plain parapet. Leigh House is set within a group that includes walls and gatepiers to the north and west.
