Description

Berryfield House, originally a large house and later a maternity hospital, was built in the early to mid-19th century and stands within extensive grounds. The main facade is constructed of ashlar and is two storeys high, with three windows. It features double-hung sash windows, lacking glazing bars. The central window is a triple-light design with narrow side lights. Rectangular dripmoulds are positioned above the windows. The ground floor is rusticated, and the facade is vertically divided into three sections by twin pilasters with panelled decoration and lion heads on their capitals. The detailing includes a plinth course, a plain band at the first-floor level, a panelled band at the pilaster capital level, a moulded cornice, and an ashlar parapet with scroll cresting. A central, projecting porch has a cornice and a balustered parapet, supported by four pilasters. It contains panelled double doors with narrow side lights, each featuring semi-circular heads and keystones. The doorway has a segmental head with a shield of arms above, approached by four steps. A single-storey bow extension with vertical pilasters and three French doors is located to the left of the main facade. To the right is a right-angled verandah supported by a colonnade of slender Tuscan columns, with a dentilled cornice and a balustered parapet. A three-storey wing extension with sash windows in plain reveals projects from the rear of the main building.
