Description

This is an early 19th-century ashlar-built house, originally named Waltham House, and formerly known as Wirksworth Maternity Home. It is three storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with three sash windows on each floor. The outer windows have three lights, set within moulded architraves and topped with cornice hoods supported by consoles. Plain sill bands run along the building, and quoins are visible at the sides. The main entrance is framed by a moulded wood doorcase featuring a rectangular fanlight above, and a portico with coupled Tuscan pilasters, an entablature, a cornice, and an open balustrade at the top. The ground floor features two mullioned three-light sash windows without glazing bars, set within moulded architraves and shallow pediments on consoles. A modillion eaves cornice runs around the building, topped by a blocking course. The end gables have stone copings and stacks. A slightly later two-storey wing is attached to the right-hand side, featuring one window above and two below, again without glazing bars. Waltham House forms a group with numbers 4 to 14 (even) on St John’s Street.
