Description

Castle Hill House, originally built in the late 18th century, serves as a maternity annexe to the Westminster Memorial Hospital and sits within its own grounds. The house is positioned at a right angle to the road. It is constructed of rough ashlar with a cornice and parapet, and has later additions at the rear. The principal front is two storeys high and features a three-window arrangement. The first-floor windows are sash windows with stone architraves and projecting keys. Flanking the ground-floor doorway are Venetian windows, each separated by strip pilasters and topped with a dentil entablature. These windows have round-headed side lights and moulded archivolts over the central lights. The doorway itself is well-detailed, with a segmental, dentil-moulded hood supported by enriched console brackets. A decorative frieze featuring a swag-and-vase design, characteristic of the Adam style, adorns the doorway. A six-step flight of stairs, flanked by iron handrails with scrolled terminals, leads up to the doorway.
