Description
Ox House is a two-storey stone ashlar house, likely built in the late 16th century to early 17th century, and has recently been restored. It is L-shaped with gable ends that feature stone copings. The roof is covered with recent plaintiles. The front of the house includes a projecting two-storey porch wing, with the upper storey being plastered. The doorway is a modern reproduction, but the inner door has moulded stone jambs and a four-centred arch. The windows have hollow-chamfered stone frames and mullions, with later sashes added. There are hood moulds above the first-floor windows and a continuous weathermould above the ground floor openings. At the rear, there is a four-centre-arched doorway. Each gable end has paired chimneys made of stone ashlar with moulded caps. Inside, the house features moulded stud and panel partitions and early 17th-century fireplaces. Ox House is noted for its internal features and is recognized as the inspiration for the 'Ox Ian' in Thomas Hardy's novel 'Jude the Obscure.'
