Description
The Matthews and Hill monuments are two chest tombs located in the churchyard southwest of the porch of the Church of St John the Baptist in Little Somerford. The tombs date from the late 18th century and early 19th century and are made of ashlar.
The first monument, the Matthews monument, is from the late 18th century and features a moulded base and capstone, with baluster angles and a finely lettered inscription on the south side commemorating William Matthews, who died in 1790.
The second monument, the Hill monument, dates from the earlier 19th century and also has baluster angles, a moulded capstone, and a ridged top. It includes framed plaques on each side, with an inscription on the north side for Margaret Hill, who died in 1826, and on the south side for Charles-Brown Hill, who died in 1851.
