Description
Three monuments in the churchyard to the east of the porch of the Church of St John the Baptist are early 19th century chest tombs. From west to east, the first is the Day monument, made of pennant stone with a moulded base and capstone, featuring lyre ends and two oval plaques on the south side with low relief central trophies. It is inscribed to Ann Day of Broad Town, who died in 1811. The second is the Sloper monument, constructed of ashlar with baluster angles, a moulded base and capstone, and framed rectangular plaques on each side. The north inscription is for Jane Sloper, who died in 1838, and the south for Thomas Sloper, who died in 1841. The third is the Sealey monument, also made of ashlar, with raised reeded angle pilasters, a deep frieze, and a ridged stepped capstone, featuring framed plaques on each side. The north inscription is for John Sealey, who died in 1821.
