Description

The lychgate at the west entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Michael was built in 1917 by H. Brakspear. It incorporates gate piers from 1760 and features a design of rubble stone banded in ashlar with a half-hipped stone slate roof, saddlestone, and ridge cross. The structure has a moulded plinth and two chamfered ashlar pointed arches at each end. There are five-light mullioned side openings, stone seats inside, and a central ashlar coffin-rest. The roof is made of open timber. An inscription inside notes that the lychgate was erected in memory of Herbert Prodgers of Kington Manor, who died in 1917. On either side of the west front, there are short curving walls that connect to rusticated corniced gate piers topped with ball finials. The north pier is inscribed with 'Thomas Stubb gave this gate 1760'.
