Description

The Close is an 18th-century house, largely reconstructed between 1924 and 1929. It is built of squared coursed rubble with stone tiled roofs. Originally a mid- to late-18th century farmhouse, the main range features coped gables, an ashlar end wall, and ridge stacks. It originally had three hipped dormers and sash windows, but all the window openings were altered between 1924 and 1929. The front has five two-light and one three-light stone mullion windows on the first floor, and one six-light window, a door, one two-light window, and one five-light mullion window on the ground floor. An east end section, possibly dating back to the 17th century, has a 20th-century dormer gable with a three-light mullion window and hood over a door. The east end has a stack and original two-light hollow moulded mullion windows with hoods, one to each floor. A two-storey wing with a ridge stack extends to the rear of the main range. A two-storey, gabled porch was added on the east side in the 20th century. The rear range and the rear wall of the main house include some mullion windows that may be original or reused. Inside, the spine passage features a panelled Perpendicular style archway, possibly reused.
