Description

A row of four estate houses on Church Road, Hilmarton, was built in 1874 as part of the Poynder estate. They are constructed of rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and have slate eaves roofs. The houses are two-and-a-half storeys high, with paired projecting gables in the centre and projecting gables at each end. Ashlar stacks are located behind each gable. The windows are stone mullioned with hoodmoulds and iron lattice lights, featuring a three-light window below and a two-light window above in each gable. The end gables have apex date plaques. A low-pitched roof extends over three-bay verandahs with timber posts, each incorporating a two-light window between two doors. A large timber dormer, with a decorative gable and a three-light timber mullion window, is set into the roof slope. Wrought iron finials adorn the roofline. The design appears to be an elaboration of Plan 4 for a pair of cottages, as described in Henry Weaver’s Hints on Cottage Architecture of 1848.
