Description
The Poynder Almshouses, built in 1877, consist of a row of five almshouses from the Poynder estate. They are constructed from rockfaced rubble stone with ashlar dressings and feature banded fishscale tiled roofs with coped gables and end stacks for each house. The design is a single-storey, elongated H-plan, with three houses in a row and one at each end. Each house has a 2-light mullion window with a hoodmould on either side of a gabled porch. The windows include iron lattice lights. The central house has a more elaborate gabled porch that is set forward, featuring a pointed-arched entry and an armorial plaque above. The houses on either side, as well as the end houses, have coped gables with a lancet window in the gable and a Tudor-arched entry with a hoodmould. The end gables facing the road of the end houses have 1:2:1-light ashlar canted bays. The overall plan appears to be inspired by a design for a group of three cottages found in Henry Weaver's "Hints on Cottage Architecture," published in 1848.
