Description

1-3, St John's Court is a range of buildings dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, substantially altered in the 18th century. It adjoins numbers 21 and 22 St John’s Street, with the entrance to number 22 being on the court side and the first bay of the range included in the same property. The building is two storeys high with an attic. It has a timber frame, now covered with stucco and colourwashed surfaces. The first floor overhangs on brackets under a boxed beam. Numbers 1 and the end bay (part of number 22 St John’s Street) have pilaster strips to the upper part. It has a gable end pantile roof. Number 3 has a colourwashed brick ground floor and an elevation to the Churchyard, featuring two windows on each floor. These windows are moulded stone mullioned casements, with 19th-century lights: four on the first floor and two on the ground floor. The elevation facing St John's Court has two 19th-century dormers on numbers 1 and 2, and five windows on the first floor. These windows are flush-framed sashes with intact glazing bars, with the exception of a two-light 19th-century casement at number 22 St John’s Street. The ground floor has a three-light casement (at number 22 St John’s Street), a small canted bay window with glazing bars, two flush-framed sash windows similar to those on the first floor, and three six-panel doors. These doors are flush on number 1, and fielded on the others, with windows and doors spaced irregularly. Numbers 1 to 4, along with the Liberal Club, form a group with numbers 1 and 2 St John’s Churchyard and Tower, and St John’s Walk.
