Description

Fitz House is a detached house located in Teffont, dating from the mid-17th century with a wing added in 1700 and alterations made in the 1920s. The building is constructed of dressed limestone and features a two-span tiled roof with gable-end rendered stacks, forming an L-plan structure.

The house is two storeys high with a three-window front. The central door has four fielded panels and is set in a gabled stone porch. On either side of the door are 4-light hollow-chamfered mullioned and transomed windows with hoodmoulds. The first floor has a 4-light recessed chamfered mullioned window with hoodmoulds on either side of a blocked window that has an inserted square chamfered light. The roof has coped verges.

To the left, there is a two-storey wing that projects to the front, featuring a blocked chamfered doorway and a 2-light mullioned window on the right return. The gable-end of this wing has a 3-light mullioned window on the ground floor, two 2-light mullioned windows on the first floor, and one 3-light mullioned window in the attic. A stone lozenge-shaped tablet on the wing bears the inscription: R/FITZ/1700/M. The left return of the wing has three 2-light mullioned windows, a recessed chamfered doorway with a sidelight under a hoodmould, and one 3-light mullioned window. The first floor includes two 2-light, two 3-light, and one 2-light mullioned windows, all recessed and chamfered, and the wing has a pantiled roof.

The right return of the main range has a lean-to extension with a 2-light mullioned window. The rear features 2-light mullioned windows on the gable-end of the wing, while the main range has a pantiled lean-to porch on the right, with a 3-light and two 2-light mullioned windows to the left. The first floor has a mix of 1-light, 3-light, and two 2-light mullioned windows.

Inside, the house has doors with six fielded panels, moulded cross beams in the room to the left of the entrance hall, several square-headed moulded stone corner fireplaces, and one Tudor-arched stone fireplace. There is a Sun Insurance disc above the front door. The wing built in 1700 is said to have been a wool store before being converted for living accommodation in the 1920s. The Fitz family were significant freeholders in Teffont Magna from the 17th century until the early 19th century.
