Description

3, The Shambles is an 18th-century building of three storeys and a tall, narrow form with a gabled roof. The front elevation has a sash window on the first floor, with glazing bars in the reveals. Above this is a Venetian window on the second floor, distinguished by its semi-circular central light and a keystone; the side lights of this window are blocked. The ground floor features a 19th-century shop front, which is an angular projection with a wooden fascia and dentilled cornice under a flat, lead-covered roof, supported by wooden brackets. Simple string courses run between the first and second floors. A square-headed doorway is positioned to the right, topped with an architrave surround. The building forms part of a group of listed buildings including the King’s Arms Hotel, numbers 2, 5 and 6 Coppice Hill, numbers 27 to 29 Silver Street (consecutive), and number 2 Kingston Road.
