Description
The King's Arms Hotel is an important corner building dating from the 18th century, located on Coppice Hill with its gable end facing Silver Street. The exterior is finished in ashlar, painted on the ground floor and gable end. The hotel has three storeys plus an attic in the south gable, topped by a slated mansard roof that is half-hipped to the south and features a stone chimney stack on the north side. There is a string course above the ground floor.
On the Coppice Hill side, there are three windows: a pair to the left and a single window to the right, all of which are sash windows with some intact glazing bars. The first-floor window to the right has decorative ironwork in the form of a balconette, while a larger balcony serves a pair of first-floor windows facing Silver Street. The entrance consists of a plain rectangular doorway.
The King's Arms extends up Coppice Hill, where it is joined by a two-storey 17th-century building of lower elevation, constructed from coursed rubble with a pantiled roof. This building features two pairs of lights on the first floor with stone mullions (both sashes and casements) beneath a continuous weather-moulding. There is another continuous weather-moulding above the ground floor, which has one pair of lights with a wooden mullion and three doors, one of which is a double set in the centre.
The King's Arms Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos 3 to 8 (consecutive) The Shambles, Nos 2, 5 and 6 Coppice Hill, Nos 27 to 29 (consecutive) Silver Street, and No 2 Kingston Road.
