Description
The Lock Up, located at Nos 6 and 6A on The Shambles, is a building that partly dates from the 15th century. It stands three storeys tall and is constructed of coursed rubble with a modern pantile roof. On the second floor, there are three wooden casements with glazing bars, while the first floor features three sashes in plain reveals without glazing bars. The ground floor has a modern shop front and doorway. To the right of the shop front, there is an original doorway with a four-centred arch, moulded jambs, and an original door that includes surface tracery and an ornamental iron knocker. The corner elevation displays a projecting chimney flue in diminishing stages, which has offsets and is topped by a tall ashlar stack. The Lock Up is part of a group of listed buildings that includes the King's Arms Hotel, Nos 2, 5 and 6 Coppice Hill, Nos 27 to 29 Silver Street, and No 2 Kingston Road.
