Description
No. 47 Martins Road is a detached cottage dating from the 17th century, which was refronted in the 18th century. The building features square-panelled timber framing with an English bond brick front and a thatched roof that has a half-hip on the left side. It is a two-bay structure, single-storey with an attic, and has two windows. The entrance consists of a four-panelled door located in a gabled porch to the left of centre. To the right, there is a three-light segmental-headed casement window with a keystone on either side. The cottage also has two eyebrow attic dormers, each with 2-light casements.
There is a 20th-century addition attached to the left return and a large projecting stack on the right return. The rear of the cottage is timber-framed with brick nogging and features 2-light casements and an eyebrow dormer with a leaded casement. A 20th-century porch is located on the right side. Although the interior was not accessible during the survey in December 1986, it is reported to retain an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel and curved corners, chamfered beams with bar stops, planked doors, and timber-framed partitions. The roof structure includes collar trusses with coupled rafters.
