Description

No 50 on High Street is a house in a row, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, and was refaced in the 19th century. It is constructed of pebbledashed stone and brick, topped with a tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with the entrance located in the end bay of No 48, known as Palm House. Inside, there is a hall that leads to a drawing room on the left and a cross stair hall that connects to a dining room and kitchen in the rear wing. The entrance features a six-panelled door with a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets. The windows are 19th-century twelve-paned sashes on both floors, and there is a hipped dormer. The roof rises above No 48 and has a half hip on the left side.

The interior likely represents the parlour end of a 17th-century house. The hall is adorned with early 18th-century pine panelling and includes a fine round-headed 18th-century display cabinet in the internal wall leading to the drawing room, which also features panelling, shutters, and an 18th-century fireplace with Carrara slips. The staircase has two turned balusters per tread, with the handrail and newel replaced by a newel from Spye Park, although the original early 18th-century handrail remains on the upper flights. The first floor includes a stone fireplace, along with additional 18th-century panelling and shutters.
