Description

The Sea Scout Hall, originally a Workman's Hall, was built in 1865-1866 for the Edward Saunders Temperance Fund. It now serves as a library, surgery, and meeting hall. The building features Flemish brickwork and a slate roof, with a tall two-storey facade consisting of four bays, including a carriage entry in the fourth bay. The entrance is centrally located within the three main bays and is adorned with a flush stone portico supported by four pilasters. Above the portico is an attic that bears an inscription and the date of construction. The bays are separated by giant brick pilasters topped with stone caps, and there are eaves and sill bands. The windows are sixteen-paned sashes with eared moulded stone architraves and cornices. The carriageway arch is made of gauged brick with a stone keyblock, and there is a clock above it with a stone surround and dripmould. The building has gable stacks and a late 19th-century two-bay wing on the left side. The rear elevation has been altered, featuring a loading door above the carriage arch and simpler sixteen-pane sashes. The eaves are dentilled. Inside, there is a large meeting hall on the first floor, with window shutters in the reveals. The building was established by the temperance society and provided soup and bread pudding to those in need. It is included for its group value and as an interesting example of mid-19th century social provision for the needy.
