Description
Beech Cottage is a semi-detached cottage dating from the mid-17th century, with a refronting in the 18th century. It is located on the north side of Main Street, Keevil. The cottage is timber-framed with brick nogging, and was refronted in irregular bond brick. It has a thatched roof with half-hips and a brick stack to the right. The property has three bays, arranged as a two-storey, three-window façade. A planked door is set beneath a gabled canopy. There are a three-light and two two-light segmental-headed casement windows on the left, a two-light cellar casement below, and a three-light and two-light casement on the right. The first floor features three three-light casement windows. The right return has no windows and retains timber-framing to the first floor and attic gable. The left return has a three-light ground floor casement and a small two-light casement to the first floor. A rear rubble stone wing incorporates a stone and brick stack. Inside, the interior features timber-framed partitions, a rear wall with a tension brace, very deep chamfered beams with broach stops, and an open fireplace at the east end with a cambered chamfered lintel on brick jambs. Planked doors are present throughout. Stairs lead to the first floor against the rear wall. A small parlour is located to the left of the entrance door and contains a 19th-century inserted fireplace, formerly used as the village post office. Jowled main posts of the cross frames are visible. There is a three-bay roof.
