Description

Blagden House is a detached house dating from the mid-17th century, which was remodeled in 1710 for Edward Blagden. The building is constructed of rendered brick and features a stone slate roof with a central stone stack that has a moulded capping. It is two stories high with an attic and has five windows. The central entrance consists of a 20th-century door set within a pointed bolection-moulded surround, flanked by two 12-pane sash windows in bolection-moulded architraves. The first floor has five sashes also in bolection-moulded architraves. A moulded stone cornice supports a decorated lead gutter beneath three attic gables, each featuring 2-light recessed hollow-chamfered mullioned casements with hoodmoulds. There are four lead rainwater hoppers marked with the initials EB and the date 1710, along with coped verges topped with ball finials on each gable.

On the left side of the house, there is a 12-pane sash in bolection-moulded architraves on either side of a glazed door, with three additional sashes in bolection-moulded cases on the first floor. The attic has two gables with cyma-mullioned casements, and the lead gutter and rainwater hopper match those on the front. The rear wall features rendered timber-framing and a lean-to extension with slated roofing and casement windows. A late 19th-century addition is attached to the right return, along with a late 18th-century service wing made of brick.

Inside, the west range has chamfered beams. Features from 1710 include a staircase with two turned balusters per open string tread, carved tread ends, a moulded handrail, six-panelled doors and shutters, and a large stone chamfered fireplace in the south drawing room. The southwest bedroom contains full fielded panelling, and the first-floor doors have two fielded panels. The entrance hall has an early 19th-century fireplace with paterae, and a similar fireplace is found in the northwest room.
