Description

Keevil War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Doulting stone and is situated outside the churchyard of the Grade II*-listed Church of St Leonard.

The memorial features a Latin cross atop a decorative carved collar, which sits on a tapering octagonal shaft that ends in inverted, chamfered stops. The cross-head has a gabled canopy with a cusped eaves cornice, and the arms of the cross are supported by carved scroll brackets. The monogram IHS is carved in relief on the south-west and north-east faces of the cross-head. The shaft rises from a two-tiered, chamfered square plinth that sits on a square platform with a moulded cornice. Each side of the base of the platform has a small rectangular block styled to match the platform.

The main inscription wraps around the four faces of the platform, starting on the north-east side, and reads: IN MEMORY OF/ OUR MEN WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914-19. The names of 18 individuals who died in the First World War are recorded in incised lettering on slate plaques set into inset panels on the lower tier of the plinth.

The north-east and south-west faces of the upper tier of the plinth display the dates 1939/ 1945 in relief, with one date on each face. The names of two casualties from the Second World War are inscribed in incised lettering on a slate plaque set into an inset panel on the north-west face of the upper tier.

The memorial stands on an octagonal stone base within a small octagonal planting area, which is bordered by stone kerbs topped with eight metal posts linked by a chain.
