Description

Nos 12 and 13 on Main Street are a pair of cottages dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. They are constructed using cruck-built timber-frame techniques with brick nogging and feature a thatched roof topped with a grouped axial brick stack. The cottages have a baffle entry and consist of four bays, standing two stories high with three windows across the front.

The entrance to No 12 is marked by a central ribbed 20th-century door set in a gabled porch. To the right, there are two three-light casement windows, and to the left, there is one three-light casement window. The first floor includes two two-light casements and one single-light casement, along with an added lateral brick stack on the right side.

On the left side, No 13 features a five-panelled early 19th-century door in a gabled porch, with a three-light casement to the right and two single-light casements on the first floor, showcasing full crucks that are exposed. There is a 1930s extension at the rear of No 13. The rear of No 12 includes a greenhouse, a glazed door, and both two-light and single-light casements, along with two gabled dormers featuring casements. No 13 has an eyebrow dormer.

The right return of the cottages reveals exposed timber-frame and crucks, with single-light and two-light casements. The interior was not accessible during the survey in December 1986, but it is noted to have a two-bay former open hall with an inserted stack and a ceiling featuring chamfered beams, along with an arch-braced collar truss roof that has moulded soffits.
