Description
The barn at Alex Farm is a structure dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is built from coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and features a Welsh slate roof. The barn consists of two parallel naves, each with 11 bays. The northern nave is divided into sections of 4, 2, and 5 bays, with a 2-bay midstrey added over the central pair of bays, and a small lean-to store on the east side. The south side has a central midstrey with a blocked arch, flanked by openings with segmental arches, and similar large openings are present at the gable ends. The north midstrey includes a flue through the inner arch and a clock tower on the gable. The barn is topped with gabled finials and has trusses featuring king posts and raking struts. It is said to have been constructed for the Stroudwater, Thames and Severn Canal Company.
