Description

Bounds Close is a detached cottage dating from the early 17th century. It is constructed of dressed limestone and features a half-hipped thatched roof with brick and stone stacks. The building has an L-plan layout with its gable end facing the road. It is a single storey with an attic and has two windows.

The front of the cottage has a 20th-century planked door at the center, a large stone lateral stack with offsets to the left, and a two-light casement window to the right. There are also two eyebrow dormers in the attic, each with two-light casements. The left side of the building, which is the gable end facing the road, has two two-light casements, with the left one set in a blocked doorway. There is one two-light casement in the attic and a coped verge. The rear of the cottage features a three-light casement on the ground floor and a two-light casement in the attic, along with a small light that illuminates the stairs. A projecting wing to the left of the rear has two-light casements on both the ground floor and the attic. The right side of the building also has two-light casements.

Inside, the cottage has deeply chamfered beams with stepped stops, open fireplaces with chamfered timber lintels that have rounded corners on chamfered stone jambs. It is said to have smoke-blackened roof timbers, suggesting that it was originally an open building before being floored in the 17th century.
