Description
No 1 High Street is a 17th-century house constructed from limewashed rubble stone, topped with a stone tiled roof. It stands two and a half storeys tall and features a projecting cross-gabled wing on the right side. The wing has a coped east gable facing the street, which includes an attic window with two lights that is recessed and chamfered, complete with a hoodmould. On the first floor, there is a pair of sash windows set in a bead-moulded surround with a dripstone above, while the ground floor has a 19th-century shop front with paired panelled pilasters and a fascia.
The south gable of the building showcases recessed chamfered mullion windows with hoodmoulds, featuring a two-light window in the attic and a three-light window on the first floor. The ground floor is partially obscured by a large single-storey projecting 19th-century canted shop that is positioned at an angle to the main range, displaying similar details to the adjoining shop front. The main range has an upper pair of six-pane sash windows, and the north gable end features two-light recessed chamfered mullion windows with hoodmoulds on both the attic and first floor.
Inside, the cross-wing contains a moulded stone fireplace from the 17th century located on the north wall. An early 20th-century photograph indicates that there were originally two sash windows in place of the current shop front in the wing.
