The building at 51-55 Winchester Street dates to approximately 1800 and occupies a corner site with St Edmund's Church Street. It is constructed of colour-washed brick with a steep, half-hipped slate roof. The Winchester Street facade has four windows on the first floor, featuring flush-framed sash windows without glazing bars. A single dormer window is located on No. 53.

No. 53 has a plain shop front, with alterations made to the pilasters and cornice. The doorway has a reeded architrave surround with roundel corner blocks and a cornice above. No. 55 features a sash window to the left and a small Victorian shop window with three camber-headed, thin mullioned lights, a cornice, and a blind case. It also has a central six-panel door. The Winchester Street front of No. 51 is characterised by two flush-framed sash windows on the first floor, one ground-floor window to the left of the shop window, and a door to the left, which is part of No. 1 St Edmund's Church Street.
Nos. 51 to 57 (odd) and the Anchor and Hope Public House form a group. Nos 51, 53 & 55 also form a group with Nos 2 to 10 (even) St Edmund’s Church Street.
