Description
16 and 18 Silver Street is a pair of houses that have been combined into one dwelling, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with a brick stack at the rear and a stone slate roof. It has a single-depth plan with a rear outshut and stands two storeys tall, featuring a two-window range.
The right-hand doorway has a segmental-arched head, a stone slate canopy supported by timber brackets, and a ribbed plank door. The ground floor includes horned 3/3-pane sash windows. To the left, there is a doorway with a timber lintel and a boarded door, along with two-light casements under the eaves. The right-hand side of the building has a small partly blocked attic window and a leaded casement, with the apex rendered above a stone slate string. The rear outshut and stack are also present.
Inside, the entrance passage is stone-flagged, and there are two fireplaces at the back of the front room, featuring a small left-hand cast-iron range from the 19th century and medieval carved work. A rear right-hand winder stair is also noted. Historically, this building may have been an infill between earlier houses, as indicated by the earlier stonework visible in the gable.
