Description

These are the remains of the bailey walls associated with Old Wardour Castle. The walls were remodelled in the 1570s for Sir Matthew Arundell, with work overseen by Robert Smythson. Constructed of dressed limestone, the walls stand approximately 6 metres high, and partially enclose a hexagonal area that extends to a rectangular shape to the north-east, mirroring the layout of Old Wardour Castle. The walls have a chamfered plinth and pitched copings. Damage to the north-west sections is attributed to siege damage sustained during the Civil War. Robert Smythson’s improvements to the castle and its setting were undertaken shortly after his work at Longleat for Sir John Thynne.
