Description

The grotto located to the northeast of Old Wardour Castle was built in 1792 by Josiah Lane of Tisbury. Constructed from tufa limestone, it is situated on a bank near the northeast line of the bailey wall and is accessed via a wide flight of stone steps. The grotto features several entrances and rocky niches at different levels, with an interior that includes rocky tunnels. It was created as part of a landscape scheme to develop pleasure gardens at Old Wardour, with Richard Woods working on the project for the Eighth Lord Arundell between 1764 and 1771, followed by Capability Brown from 1773.
