Description

Rock Arch is a tunnel located in Wardour Park, Tisbury, dating from around the 1760s or possibly the 1790s. It was either designed by Richard Woods for the eighth Lord Arundell or constructed by Josiah Lane of Tisbury. The tunnel features rustic limestone random blocks for its walls and a coursed rusticated limestone arch made of smaller blocks, forming a long semi-circular barrel vault. There are long rustic retaining walls at both ends of the tunnel, which is covered with earth. The exact date of construction remains uncertain, as it could be part of Woods' landscaping work in the 1760s or Lane's design in the 1790s.
