Description
The Old Bakery is a detached house located on Main Street in Keevil. It dates from the early 17th century, with later additions from the late 17th century and early 19th century. The building features square-panelled timber-framing with painted brick nogging and a thatched roof, along with sections of English bond brick. The 19th-century bay has a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks at the right gable ends of each part of the building.
The house is two storeys high and has three windows. The entrance includes a planked door with a thatched canopy above it. To the left of the door is a 2-light casement window, and to the right are two 2-light casements. The early 19th-century bay has a 16-pane sash window on both the ground and first floors. On the first floor of the 17th-century section, there is a 2-light casement window to the left bay and a 3-light casement window in the right-hand raking dormer.
At the rear, there is a lean-to extension, with 16-pane sash windows in the 19th-century bay, a 4-light attic casement, and a single-storey wing to the right, which was formerly a bakehouse. Inside, the building features chamfered beams with bar stops, an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel on stone jambs, and planked doors. The rear extension contains bake ovens made of cast iron by F.W. Jones of Fishponds, Bristol. In addition to serving as the village bakery, this house was also used as a Post Office around 1900.
