Description
The Congregational Church Hall, built in 1740 and enlarged in 1793 and 1835, is located on St Margaret's Street. Access is through a gateway on the road, featuring stone piers and cast and wrought-iron double gates, along with an arched lamp bracket. There are four steps leading up from the road. The building is constructed of ashlar and has five windows on two levels, along with a two-storey, two-window wing that is slightly set back on the left side of the main facade. This wing has a lower roof level.
The main facade features a hipped slate roof with eaves. The upper windows are leaded and have modern coloured glass with chamfered reveals, while the lower windows are sashes with glazing bars. The central doorway is square-headed with panelled double doors, framed by a stone doorcase with pilasters, an entablature, and a blocking course. Above the upper center window is an oval moulded panel that displays the dates of the building and its enlargements. A plain string course runs above the windows and extends over the panel in the form of an open pediment. The windows in the left-hand wing are also sashes, and there is a similar doorway. To the left, there is an additional range built in 1835, which contains a third doorway of the same style and four windows, serving as the Church Hall.
The Congregational Church Hall is part of a group that includes the Three Horseshoes, Nos 1 to 4 Frome Road, the Liberal Club, the Baptist Chapel, the Congregational Church, and several other properties on St Margaret's Street and St Margaret's Hill.
