Description
The former engine house, located northwest of Ashton Mills, dates back to 1862. It is a two-storey building designed in an 'L' shape, constructed of red brick with stone dressings. The structure features a cill band on the first floor, an eaves band, and paired gutter brackets. The roof is a combination of slates and corrugated asbestos, with coped weathered verges and moulded footstones.
On the south side, there are three first-floor windows and a large two-storey round-headed window positioned to the right of center, which was part of the engine house. The ground floor windows have been blocked. The north wing displays a tablet dated 1862 above an attic window on a stone band at the base of the gable, along with three windows; there is an arcade of three openings with stone keys, although the sides are blocked on the ground floor. The east gable features a curved triangular blind window and paired two-storey round-headed windows.
