Description
Dial House is a house dating from 1691, with significant alterations and additions likely made in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of English bond brickwork with a slate roof, extended to the right using Flemish bond and stone slate. The house is two storeys and five by two bays, and possesses a symmetrical design featuring a central stair hall and flanking reception rooms. A central bolection moulded doorcase frames a six-panelled door, above which is a two-light overlight. A string course runs along the facade, and stone cross windows have reserve chamfers. A sundial sits above the entrance. Dentilled eaves cap the building, and the roof is hipped and sprocketed. Stacks are located on the rear walls of the front range. The left elevation features two flat-roofed dormers. The wing to the right has flush stone quoins, with the upper floor rebuilt; it has one two-light stone window and the remainder are timber windows. A gable stack is present, and the roof is hipped, incorporating two internal wells.
Inside, the hallway contains a notable late 17th-century staircase with a balustrade raised on a string. The left living room retains a 17th-century bolection moulded fireplace, panelling and cornice. The right room features similar cornice, mahogany dado panelling and a matching fireplace. Dado panelling is also found in the hall. A similar cornice and panelling extends to a room at the rear towards the west, with further panelled rooms on the first floor, including some earlier 17th-century hardwood panelling. Bolection moulded stone fireplaces are a consistent feature throughout, some with tin-glazed tiles and 19th-century iron grates made by Carron. The bathroom contains a contemporary naive painting on canvas set within a pilastered chimneypiece.
