Description
Hunt's House is a house located in West Lavington, dating from the early 19th century, with elements from the mid-18th century. The building features roughcast on brick with a slate roof, and earlier sections made of greensand rubble with stone quoins. It has two storeys and cellars, with the original structure set parallel to the road, consisting of three bays, a central hall, and an entrance leading to the hall with an internal stack. The house was extended in the early 19th century with a wide north front and a west range, which may be slightly later and runs parallel to the original building.
The entrance includes a central six-panelled door with a fanlight, sheltered by a Tuscan stone portico. There are flanking French windows in three-centred arched openings, and the first floor has paned windows. The eaves are boxed, and the roof is hipped. The west wing features 16-pane sash windows with gauged brick lintels. Inside, there is a fine early 19th-century staircase in the hall, an early 19th-century fireplace in the northeast sitting room, and a lead hand pump with a basin in the rear entrance lobby. The house is associated with Justice William Hunt, a jurist whose work contributed to the foundation of the New Jersey legislature.
