Description
Bean Mill is a corn mill located on the River Till, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of flint and clunch with brick dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The building is two stories high and has two windows with casements. On the south side, there are two segmental brick arches over the river, complete with brick keystones. The ground floor includes a planked door and two types of cast-iron casements: a 2-light and a single-light. The west gable has planked doors on the ground, first, and attic floors, while the east gable features a planked door, a 2-light cast-iron casement on the first floor, and a single-light casement in the attic.
Inside, the mill retains a working cast-iron water wheel, which is currently used to pump water from a bore. Some of the gearing is still present, although it is disconnected. The first floor has one grinding stone, and the attic floor contains wooden grain hoppers that remain in situ. Bean Mill is part of a series of mills located along the Till and Wylye Rivers, many of which were built by the Wilton Estate.
